The Japanese government has announced a national agenda for the promotion of science and technology and universities have been assigned a central role in the creation, management and application of new scientific knowledge. As members of society, universities have an important role to play in increasing national competitiveness and stimulating economic growth through their research activities in science and technology and the management of the intellectual property created by such research activities.
On October 1, 2001, Sophia University established“Sophia University Regulations with regard to new intellectual property.”These regulations defined the rights of individual researchers and the university with regard to intellectual property created by members of the Sophia faculty in the course of their research activities and established a committee to review new research and potential patent applications. In cases where the university decides to make a patent application in the name of the university, intellectual property rights are managed by the university.
