Scholarships for International Students (Student Visa Holder)

A variety of Scholarships are available for a non-Japanese regular student who has come from abroad to study at Sophia with a “Student” (ryugaku) status of residence. Please check Bulletin Board “Loyola” for all application information. Please feel free to contact the Center for Student Affairs if you have sudden changes in your financial situation or if you are not sure which scholarship is right for you.
Sophia University New Student Scholarship (May Apply for Before Entering Sophia University)
This is a grant-type scholarship (repayment is not required) providing full, half, or one-third of the tuition for students with excellent grades whose first-choice university is our university experiencing financial difficulties that affect their studies.
Sophia University Tuition Support Scholarship
This is a grant-type scholarship (repayment is not required) providing full, half, or one-third of the tuition for students who are experiencing financial hardship that makes it difficult to continue their studies despite tremendous motivation.
Sophia University Benefactors’ Scholarship
These scholarships are provided by benefactors in and outside Japan for students who meet the requirements set by the benefactors (application type or recommendation type).

External Scholarships (Offered by Private Organizations)
These scholarships are provided by private organizations in and outside Japan for students who meet the requirements set by the organizations.

Types of External Scholarships
External scholarships are categorized into 3 types as below. When you apply for a scholarship, please check its type first. Make sure to understand the flow for the application procedure, necessary documentation and specified section to submit it to.
- University Recommendation based Type:
Applicants submit the applications(specified by university) to the university and the university selects nominees to the external scholarship foundations. There will be further selection process at the foundations.
- University-Coordinated Type:
Applicants submit applications(specified by scholarship foundation) to the university. The university send all the applications to the scholarship foundation without screening process.
- Direct Application Type:
Applicants submit applications(specified by scholarship foundation) directly to the foundations.
JASSO Honors Scholarship for Privately – Financed International Students
This study grant (48,000 yen per a month /FY2021 result) is awarded to students with excellent grades and character who need financial assistance to continue their studies as an international student.
